Having directed over 400 ads in the last 25 years, Tony is a true all-rounder, who’s learnt to balance his strengths in service to the story.
Tony started in the camera department in Hollywood and became one of South Africa’s top DOPs, but his diverse directing reel is admired as much for its character-driven humanity as it is for his striking visuals.
Remarkably versatile, Tony is as comfortable on car commercials as he is directing humour; he has a gift for shifting his tone and style to suit your idea’s unique needs.
Tony is the only South African director to have won the Best of Show Grand Prix at New York Festivals International Advertising Awards. He is also one of only three to have won Gold at Cannes Lions, where he also helped South Korea win its first ever Lion.
He’s worked all over the world, from Europe and Asia to Africa and the Middle East, on some of the world’s biggest brands, including Audi, BP and Mercedes-Benz.
Tony lives in Johannesburg, where he co-founded Frieze Films in 1998.

Shooting for Africa in South Africa is a viable and positive solution for clients looking to create commercials or content for African regions. South Africa has vast casting and versatile locations as well as the benefit of an established and thriving film industry. Frieze has offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Shooting into Africa is also possible. Although equipment and crew are scarce, solutions can be found in certain regions where basic equipment and crew exist and can be complemented with a small entourage from South Africa. Very often a solution for clients can be found where certain shots (ie location setting) can be shot in Africa and the detail material shot in South Africa to match. Alternatively casting can be done in the country of choice and flown to South Africa for the shoot. Frieze has established relationships in key regions such as Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria. These offer stepping-stones to further regions.
Tailor made solutions that balance casting and location and budget requirements are the order. Frieze can offer a bridge to clients looking to expand into Africa and enjoy the professional and detailed production processes expected by multi nationals with several layers of approval process across the globe.
